Review: by MEsch1974

One of the coolest, biggest, next the the Great Old One, himself, Cthulu, pieces out there for HrC is the Alien Queen. Without her Egg Sack Base, she clocks in at a whopping 300 points (an army in and of herself!), +3 PT's, and a whopping 25 click-deep, four-square sized dial, she's certainly the beast she is portrayed in the films. She begins with Leap/Climb, Hissss (Trap), Exoskeleton (Stamina) and Savagery, and has a short ranged attack of 4 squares. Two clicks in, she loses the Hisss (Trap) & Savagery, but gains Merciless (Agony). Thoughout her dial, her powers continue to morph as she becomes angrier at being hit, to include Piercing Tail (Assassin), Rampage, Reflexes, & Acid Blood (Area). I recall my horror at first glimpsing the Queen in "Aliens"... and the sculpt preserved that quite nicely. For a period of several weeks after I got my grubby hands on this action pack, my cohorts here would often groan whenever I pulled her out as my army. On the BPRD map, with her ability to swim, she is a free-roving terror that can dominate that map with little difficulty.

On her Egg Base, her point total baloons to 450, and she loses her mobility in the spirit of her being "chained down", as reflected in her harness dial. Hit the wrong part of that dial, and she's effectively trapped, if only using the Alien Drone minions, but hit it right, and it's only a matter of time until she's again free-roaming. Her Chained Queen dial features a trio of powers, including FACEHUGGER, INVULNERABLE, STAMINA, and PIERCING TAIL (IMPALE). THe only one of these that requires explaination is FACEHUGGER Ranged Combat Attack

Pretty slick, huh?

The Egg Sac itself features three unique, but unsurprising powers:
Quote:
OFFSPRING At the beginning of your turn, place an Alien Egg minion from outside the game in an unoccupied space adjacent to the Egg Base.

CHESTBURSTER At the beginning of your turn, you may choose to remove from the game a victim token from the card of a friendly monster and flip over a friendly Alien Egg minion.

XENOGENESIS At the beginning of your turn, you may choose to flip over a friendly Alien Egg minion.

Her only drawbacks, tactically speaking, are in closed, indoor maps, her movement can be compromised with her need to occupy 4 continuous squares, and she would be vulnerable to range attacks greater than her own range.

Alien Queen Strategy by Bill Rock

One of the greatest sci-fi movie monsters of all time comes to HorrorClix in the form of the Alien Queen! The Queen has been designed to be playable either as a stationary, egg sac–attached terror, or as the unchained, fully mobile beast she became later in the movie. As the matriarch of the unstoppable Alien horde, the Queen is, fittingly, a double-base monster that takes up 18 spaces when attached to her Egg Base and 4 spaces when freed.

The Egg Base has three separate dials:

Chained Queen Dial, which represents the immobile Alien Queen’s ability to attack nearby opponents
Egg Sac Dial, which represents the Queen’s ability to lay Alien Eggs
Harness Dial, which represents the metal harness restraining the Queen

When attached to the Egg Base, the Queen’s main feature is her ability to lay eggs that eventually become Alien Drone minions. Each round you may choose to use the Egg Sac Dial’s Offspring power, which allows you to take an Alien Egg minion from outside the game and place it in an unoccupied space adjacent to the egg sac.

The Alien Egg minion, while unable to move or deal damage, can still be a threat on the battlefield with its Facehugger power. With this power, upon a successful attack, the Egg minion deals 1 unavoidable damage to the opposing monster and, if the target has zero or one action tokens, it receives another action token as well. Of course, as you probably know, the Alien Egg’s primary function isn’t really combat . . . .

Once created, these Alien Egg minions can be transformed into Alien Drone minions in a couple of different ways. The Xenogenesis power on the Egg Sac dial allows you to simply flip over an Alien Egg token, turning it into an Alien Drone. The Chestburster power also allows you to flip over an Alien Egg into a Drone; however, this time you must remove from the game a victim token from the monster card of a friendly monster.

The Alien Drone minion has powers similar to those of the Alien figures from the AVP: Aliens Collector’s Set. Unique to this type of Alien, however, is the Ravage power, which allows the Alien Drone to make a second close combat attack, as a free action, if the first attack succeeds. This means that a Drone minion has the potential to deal 4 damage in one turn!

In addition to her unique minion-creating abilities, the Alien Queen herself is a force to be reckoned with purely as a combat piece. The Chained Queen Dial represents the Queen while she is bound with heavy chains by the Predators. With some competitive opening stats, like 17 defense and 10 attack, as well as powers such as Piercing Tail and Facehugger, she certainly can’t be ignored.

One of the Alien Queen’s most interesting features is her Harness Dial. Simulating the chains used by the Predators to imprison her in the underground pyramid in Alien vs. Predator, you can use your own pieces (such as the Alien Drone minions) to attack this dial, thereby weakening and eventually destroying the chains and freeing the Queen to rampage around the map.

The harness is a tough nut to crack, as it should be. Powers like Invulnerable and Metal Harness are designed to make damaging the harness difficult, but with minion powers like Facehugger and Ravage you should be able to relive the movie by allowing the Queen’s own offspring to free her.

Once freed of the harness the Alien Queen turns into an absolute juggernaut. A seemingly endless list of powers like Acid Blood, Piercing Tail, Rampage, and Savagery complement an already dominating (and lengthy) fourth dial: the Alien Queen dial. When facing the Queen your opponent will be forced to decide whether it is easier to ignore her rapidly multiplying minions and take on the Queen while in the harness, or take out the minions and wait for the Queen to be released. Either way it spells wicked fun for all involved!
