Harry PotterClix
A HorrorClix Solitaire Variant
by MarchHare
Author's Note:
This is a variant of the WizKids game HorrorClix which uses custom victim tokens from
the Harry Potter franchise. These custom victims can all be found here. I had nothing to do with the creation of any of these victims
(all are credited to Aahz) and only used the previously-created victims to create the
solitaire system.
The rules follow the standard HorrorClix rules except that the
victims all have inherent traits and abilities they can use to fight off monsters.
Being a solitaire variant there are no opposing monsters. Be forewarned that upon
first glance, the rules may appear daunting--but fear not, once the basic system is
clear, most of the victims are very similar to one another and the basic abilities
are used repeatedly with only a few unique ones among the whole lot.
Objective:
Eliminate as many students and faculty of Hogwarts as possible before they can escape.
Army Size:
300pts (no Plot Twists for solitaire game)
Rules:
Follow the standard rules with the following exceptions:
1) The game is played on two maps, side by side. Victims are randomly spread across
the twenty-four victim starting areas, per the standard rules. The player can
start their monsters in multiple starting areas provided that a minimum of 100pts
begins in each area.
2) No monsters are allowed to rescue victims, unless otherwise allowed by a victim's
special traits/abilities. All victims are considered to be slain. Monsters with
powers that depend on rescued victims get the same benefits for victims that are
slain. (This is similar to Great Cthuhlu rules for Cultist tokens).
3) Slaying is not automatic. When a victim would be slain under the normal rules,
roll 1D6 and compare the value with the victim's slaying table. The corresponding
result on the slaying table determines the result of the slaying attempt.
4) Starting on the 6th turn, victims may attempt to escape the mapsheet. To escape
the map, a victim must spend one full turn in a deployment area (marked by a purple
online on the map). At the end of the turn following the one where the victim
entered a deployment area, remove that victim from the map and set it aside--that
victim is considered to have escaped. No victims with a "teacher" type may attempt
to escape until all victims of type "student" are slain, rescued (per "Herbologist" special ability), or have escaped. After that time, they may escape the map normally.
Determining Winning and Losing for Solitaire Game:
The game ends when no more victims remain. Points are tabulated as follows:
1) All ghost and student victims are worth 15pts
2) All death-eater and teacher victims are worth 25pts
3) Harry Potter is worth 50pts.
4) All killed monsters subtract their point total from the player's points.
5) No points are awarded for rescued victims (per "Herbologist" special ability).
6)
Tablulate the total number of points for the player as well as the points of all the
escaped victims. If the player's points are higher than the total points of all
escaped victims, the player wins. If the escaped victims are worth more points,
the player loses.
Tips:
1) Play the victims to their best benefit--In the standard HorrorClix games, victims
are often moved directly into the path of their own slaughter. For the solitaire game,
victims need to try and help one another and/or escape to the best of their abilities.
Otherwise, it's just too easy for the player to win.
2) Use monsters you typically never use--At no point in the solitaire game do a
monster's actual stats, possibly excepting special abilities in a few instances,
really matter as far as gameplay is concerned. Low attack/defense/damage/range are
really secondary to movement and lifespan, so try some new things and have fun with it.
3) If you're really into the Harry Potter series, try "role-playing" the victims--have
the victims do actions (run away, charge, move towards friends, etc) consistant with
how they behave in the books or movies. I am not familiar enough with the series to
suggest anything more specific (Wikipedia deserves a fair amount of credit for getting
me this far, quite honestly, as I have only passing knowledge of the series).
Multiplayer Option:
Obviously, the victim rules here could be expanded into a normal 2+ person game with
very minimal changes. Here's what I'd recommend:
--Tabulate points similar to the solitaire game, except give victims credit for their
kills. If the victims escaping score the most points of anyone, then no player is
considered to have won. Otherwise, standard victory conditions apply.
--If a player is using minions, they can not move a minion in place of a victim in the
Suspense Phase, unless all victims have been slain/escaped/rescued.
--If a plot twist would be played to prevent a slaying, wait until all victim abilites
and traits are completed before playing the card (assuming the slaying attempt has not
already failed)--note that this can make slaying very difficult, sometimes.
--Do not allow any Subplots from the HorrorClix base set, except "Last Monster Standing" and "Nobody Gets Out Alive". This makes scoring points less ridiculous as someone could
practically win by just playing "Bitter Hatred" and naming "students".
--Do not allow Plot Twists "Unlucky at Love" and "Never Gets Undressed". Come on, these
are children we're talking about!
List of All Victim Tokens and their Associated Traits/Abiltiies
(victims are arranged alphabetically, by first name, exactly as they are on the website)
(treat the following charts as the victim's cards, similar to the monster cards from boosters)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: Bellatrix Lestrange
Type: Death-Eater
House: Slytherin
Speed: 4
Abilities:
Protector: If a monster attempts to slay a victim adjacent to this one, roll 1D6. On
a result of 4-6 the victim is not slain. Use this ability only if the roll on the
victim's slaying table results in a successful slaying of that victim. (this ability
may only be used with adjacent student victims from House Slytherin).
Slaying Table:
1: Bellatrix Lestrange is slain.
2: "Disapparition" - The slaying attempt fails. Move this victim to any space on
the map that is not designated as a starting area.
3: "Expelliarmus" - The slaying attempt fails. This victim does not move. Roll 1D6 and move the monster back that number of spaces in a straight line starting from the

a wall, another monster, or another victim, stop the monster prior to the obstacle
and deal one unpreventable damage to that monster.
4: "Crucio" - The slaying attempt fails. Move this victim one space. Deal two
unpreventable damage to the monster that attempted the slaying.
5: "Imperio" - The slaying attempt fails. The victim does not move. The player to
the left of the active player moves the monster that attempted the slaying to any
space on the board. That player then gives the monster an action that doesn't
result in a slaying attempt. When the action resolves, deal one unpreventable damage
to that monster and give it tokens such that it has two.
6: "Avada Kedavra" - The slaying attempt fails. This victim does not move. The
monster that attempted the slaying is killed. The monster's owner loses points equal
to that monster's cost.
