Grave Games Background- Craig sat with his back to the tombstone, furtively shining his flashlight left and right about the graveyard. “Trust me Ed, it’ll work. We used the official game engine, it can’t fail!” Ed stared at the ground, looking uncomfortable and nervous. Ed usually looked nervous, especially around exam papers or girls, but now he could get into some real trouble. “I don’t know, C. Why did we have to steal the book? Couldn’t we just have made stuff up?” Craig sighed and rolled his eyes. For a straight-A student, Ed really needed a lot of explanation. “Come on, man. We said we’d show them all, make them take us seriously, and we will – the book has the real deal, spells and all. We can put it back once we’re finished here.” His companion shuddered, remembering how awful the book had looked the first time he saw it. The pride of Miskatonic University Library, rumoured to be bound in human skin. They’d spent days figuring out how to ‘borrow’ it. Ed was just concerned that they hadn’t put enough thought into putting it back. Craig stood up, placed his flashlight on the top of the crypt and began to rummage around in his backpack. He produced two small packages, wrapped in a silky material covered in arcane symbols, and offered both to Ed. “Come on, it won’t take long. Pick one.” Craig was beginning to feel real excitement sweeping over him. It had taken him days to translate the spells to the index cards. Now it was time to put it all to the test. Ed took one of the packages from his friend’s hand, and suddenly felt the same excited rush. It was like buying a whole box of boosters. “You’re right C – this is gonna be the best game of Tragic: The Saddening ever!” Objective- No victim tokens are placed at the beginning of the game, but may be placed later (see Special Scenario Rules). Each player also assembles a crypt of 7 cards as opposed to the usual six (additional plot twist cards provided by monster cards are still added as usual). At the beginning of the game this crypt is shuffled and placed face-down on the table. Players may not pick up their crypt to look at it at any point (exception – subplot cards are played in the usual way, and must be separated from the crypt prior to shuffling). Monsters are placed in the usual starting areas. Special Scenario Rules- Crypts: At the beginning of any Preview phase, each player draws the top card of their crypt into their hand. The hand must be kept separate from the crypt, and is not revealed to the other player. Only plot twist cards from a player’s hand may be played. Players: Each Player token has 10 hit points. Once the Player has 0 hit points, that player is defeated, and the game ends (see Endgame). Player tokens take damage in the same way Monsters do, but no attack roll is required, the damage is automatically applied. Attacking a Player is an action and gives the attacker an action token. Player tokens cannot attack. Player tokens can be moved as an extra action in addition to the 2 actions per turn, but they are assigned an action token if they do so. Players break away automatically. Player tokens cannot be consumed as victims, nor can they be rescued. Victims: A Player may choose to sacrifice 1 point of Health during the Suspense phase to summon a Victim. This action can be taken instead of moving a victim, and the new victim is brought into play face-down on one of the bloodspots on the map. The usual victim rules apply to this token. The game ends when one of the two Players has been killed. Points are now tallied – monsters are scored as usual, victims are only worth any points if a plot twist specifies they are. Killing the other player scores no points, but the surviving player scores 5 points for each remaining Hit Point on his/her Player token. Whoever scores highest wins!
