The Defiant Ones
A Horrorclix Solitaire Scenario

By Octavious2799

Introduction:
I love doing these multiple scenarios (solitaire, coop and 2-player) because it shows of the quality and versitily of the game. I take it as a compliment to the designers.

This scenario was designed to be played on the Star Lab map from Heroclix but if you do not posses that map you can use the Lab (heroclix), prison (heroclix) fit the theme. If you have neither of those then you can use horrorclix Indoor/Outdoor map. You are just having your figures get out though the opposing players starting area.

To play this solitaire use either Uberman's Survival HorrorClix or my Alternate Survival HorrorClix.

To play coop, each player should pick a figure and play as them. Since there is no vulnerability you get an action every round. Make sure you are making the attack rules for the oppossing army for the other player.

In 2-player; one person plays the escapees and one person plays the Lab workers.

Enjoy the scenario and as always feedback is appreciated.

Background: When Doctor Jonathan Varley hired former world class decathlete and recent college graduate Ben Gains as his personal lab assistant he was very excited. Ben’s pleasant, energetic and naïve personality stood taller than his 5 foot frame and brightened up a visually dark, personally cold and otherwise work-oriented atmosphere. From the interview process the tall, thin Doctor seemed overly interested in the short, stocky former athlete’s family and personal medical history. Ben was curious but not concerned as to why he was asked to take a complete physical with blood work to ensure he is the “right” candidate for the job. Having a familiarity with these types of request from his sports background he rationalized and complied with the request.

His response to the situation after telling his fiancé was, “Well he IS the founder of Pandora and he didn’t make his first billion dollars by following the crowd. Anyway, I have seen more obsessive and controlling behavior from my former track coaches.” His fiancé trusted Ben’s rational in this situation, instead of following her instincts; immediately going to Pandora and demanding an explanation from the tall creepy man, Dr. Varley.

After 3 mundane months of chemical spill cleaning and x-ray technician work, Ben’s curiosity had started to evolve into something more, distrusting, with the secretive Doctor’s next request; daily injections of an unknown and unexplained substance. When questioned the Dr. exclaimed, “Everyone who does chemical cleaning takes the same daily injections. My dear boy, this is for your protect from all the highly toxic chemicals in The Lab. The toxins from the plague vagrant and vat-clone projects alone, if take from the lab, would destroy entire communities. You don’t want to put your fiancé in jeopardy, do you?” Rationalizing the doctor’s request he complied and started taking the daily injections.

Three months and several severe illness-related-hospital-stays-with-no-known-causes later as well as a number of physical changes, his suspicions grew more. Fueled by his fiancé’s encouragement, Ben, one late night, found himself back in the doctor’s office looking through his desk’s locked drawers for something, anything that would help confirm the suspicions he had about the spooky doctor and his unusual request. Dr. Varley appeared unnoticed behind the inexperienced intruder while he was frantically reading some revealing personal notes on insect stem cell research. Ben felt the sting of a large syringe plunged into the muscle of his shoulder. The high-powered sedative quick-acting effects gave him very little time to react. After pushing past the doctor, Ben tried to make it to the doorway when his legs lost sensation and gave out. He crashed to the floor unable to get up; his body would not respond to his commands. Finally, before blacking out, the haunting tall thin silhouette of the doctor walking towards him was the last thing he saw.

When Ben woke up; he was locked in a well-lite, large glass habitat with a dirt floor littered with unusual items such as: trees, piles of leaves, grass and papers. Similar to a habitat you would see for an animal in a zoo. He instantly goes into a screaming, pounding rage when he sees the doctor across the room writing. The tall thin man in a Lab Coat abruptly pulls away from his work, greets him with a warm smile and genuine concern for his comfort. When questioned, Dr. Varley begins to explained, “You have been asleep for a few days. The Experimental Injection of the highly- potent neurotoxin called the Bolus Infusion produces the most Unfortunate Side Effects.” He continued talking while going back to writing in his notepad, “I knew who you were the moment you walked into my office looking for a job and that you could be, potentially, the perfect physical specimen for my experiment that had been stalled due to lack of good test subjects. Why else would such an inexperienced and under-qualified lab assistant get hired for such a very high profile and important position?” He told Ben that he tested genetically compatible to become the perfect survivor in his most masterful project yet. He has been prepping Ben’s body for months through phases. Phase one; exposure to chemical cocktails and low to moderate doses of radiation to lower his bodies natural defenses and phase two; daily injections of low-dose mutated insect stem cells so his body wouldn’t reject it and to Enforce Mutation. He also explained to Ben, after he asked about his fiancé, “Your death had been successfully faked the night you broke into my lab and your fiancé believed it completely. She even blamed herself for encouraging you and even apologized to me. You should have seen your memorial service, it was beautiful.” Ben fell to his knees in silent, helpless frustration.

Although time had been hard to measure, his ability to think clearly and speak normally had started to become labored, Ben guessed it had been several months that he had been held captive, feed liquefied glucose compounds as meals and subjected to numerous tests and blood work. His skin texture had been severely altered and his eye sight had become very bad. Consequently, his sense of smell and touch had become extremely heighten. Ben could smell the doctor approach… before he even enters the room. He also developed the inhuman ability to climb walls and uncharted levels of super human strength. Wall-crawling filled the void in his otherwise long, thoughtless days.

He woke up one morning to find he had to give complete mental focus to formulate words and his left arm from shoulder down was completely covered in a medical wrap with a brace to hold it stable. The Doctor explained that the bandages were from a genetic grafting and the first half of the final stages of his project. Being confronted with the thought of losing his humanity, Ben asked about his fiancé. The creepy doctor took a step towards Ben, with a coy smile informed him that he had become a father to a newborn baby girl, while living here, and that a good friend and former partner in an early business venture, is the Pediatrician. Varley’s eyes widened, he became excited but spoke slowly and softly as he explained, “she is an incidental part of this experiment and I will be monitoring her development with great anticipation.”

Ben’s rage reached a boiling point but with no outlet, except himself, he quickly ripped off the brace and tore the bandages on his arm to see what had been done. He screams in horror at what he saw. His arm looked insect-like in appearance with a hook at the end. After seeing his arm, Ben finally solved the mystery of how “the perfect survivor project” will conclude. He was being transformed into a grotesque Insect Man. He stumbled back against the glass wall of his habitat and fell to the floor. Then began to asking the never answered question, “w..wwhy…. m..meeeeeeeeeee?”

9 months later the notoriously renowned Dr. Jonathan Varley is presenting one of his most recent experiments to the scientific community’s black market, Insect Man. His fellow scientist reacted in horror and disgust some even suggested they would report him; he had to get rid of the evidence. Feeling rejected and not knowing what to do; he took his Insect Man back to the lab at Pandora, where he would be transported to an isolated Island off the coast of Africa to live out the rest of his days. Insect Man, Ben Gains, who lost the ability to verbally communicate several months ago, could understand what was being said and knew what the Doctor had planed for him. Ben could only think of one thing, home. He had to get home. He had to see his family.

Taking advantage of a rookie lab attendant’s sloppy work, Ben was able to escape. Free the habitat for the first time in almost 2 years, now he wants to escape from… The Lab.

Objective: Escape from the Lab with the other experiments from the cruel Dr. Jonathan Varley and his company, Pandora.

Army Size:
Defiant Ones (player) army; 200 points, 5 figures maximum with three actions per turn. Only these figures may be used for your team; Insect man, Lab Gorilla, Reptosapien, Vat- Grown Clone, Frothweiler, Proto-Cyborg, Carnage- Bot, Athena, Gyrus, Plague Vagrant and the Outpatient.

The Lab (opposing) army: 300 points; d6 for number of actions per turn. Army must be composed of; Doctor Von Raechter, Lab Assistant, Igor, Morgue Attendant, Brain Eater, Corp. Response and Scrubber.

Time Limit: 60 minutes (up to you)

Map: Star Labs map from Heroclix map set. If do not have this map then substitute the Lab map (Armor Wars) or Prison (Synister) from Heroclix or Indoor/ Outdoor map from Horrorclix. If you Indoor/ Outdoor, start on the indoor portion.

Setup: Use 12 Plot Twist instead of 6 (see special rules below).

Use 6 victims and 6 minions. For victim tokens use only; Grad students, Lab Assistant, Doctor, Nurse, Psychiatrist and Scientist (AvP set). Victims from the Hellboy set maybe used as well.

Use only Guardian minions if possible; if not use a mix of Occult minions and Guardian minions. Mix them up and place them per standard rules.

Determine how you want to randomly place the Victim/ Minion tokens around the map.

Opposing figures start 4 figures in the Center of the map (this older map has no starting area).

Your friendly figures will start in rooms on the map that match your figures archetype.

  • Insect man starts as your active figure in the room with no man in the picture (when using the Star Lab Map). Or you can pick one figure to be your active figure. (make sure you change the background story to meet your figures story)
  • On Star Lab Map; Figures with the keyword Robot can only start in the room with robots.
  • On Star Lab Map; Figures with the keyword Cyborg can only start in the room with the robot Superman on the table.
  • On Star Lab Map; All other figures start in cells with a person in the picture.

Coop set up: Similar to one player but both players have 1 active figure they control and can have a maximum of 6 figures on their 200 point team (100 points to build per player).

2-Player Set Up: Similar to one player, the Lab team starts with 4 on the board but get to pick their starting 4. As a monster is defeated, pull the top card from the monster deck and place them at the doorway.

Special Scenario Rules per standard solitaire rules with a few exceptions:

  • “We are not all helpless victims! I’m not going down without a fight!”: When the minion tokens are flipped over, the are not converted to a figure but instead, they attack with the figures. You do not control minion tokens but instead fight them.
  • “Get away from me you freakish monster! Don’t touch me!”: A Plot Twist card will be pulled whenever you attempt a slaying of a victim as well as when the opposing army does (per standard rules). Duplicate of cards maybe used. Remember, in this scenario you are the hideous beast that eats people, so nobody is going to go willingly.
  • “Free me! Me want out too!”: Other figures in your army will only become active (able to be given an action) after you free them from their cells. To free them you must end your turn in a space adjacent to their cell door. The following turn their cell is deactivated and you may assign both figures (the freer and the freed) action per standard rules. If the figure is not in a cell (robots), stand adjacent to the figure to active it.
  • I think we are going to need back up.” Whenever a new monster is brought into the game (via pulling from the Monster Deck), it enters the map through the exit door.
  • “They are animals not monsters, they deserve to be free!” Sympathic, animal loving employees of Pandora who secretly don’t agree with the experiments are causing trouble by freeing some of these experiments. Because of that Victim tokens can activate inactive monsters friendly monsters.
  • “They are not a threat, keep moving” Opposing monsters and minions do not attack inactive monsters. The game will end when all active friendly monsters are defeated.

Victory Conditions: Escape the lab or defeat all figures and minions in the opposing army.

Here are some helpful hints for escaping the Lab:

  • You don't have to defeat all figures to win the scenario. The first way to win this scenario is to escape. Don't get caught up (like I did) in defeating opposing figure because your dice are hot and you love the thrill of the kill. Eventually and inevitably, wave after wave of opposing monsters and the occassional suprise minion hit combined with Plot Twist cards being played against you for a slaying attempt, will start to wear your figures down no matter how good the dice rollls are.
  • Stay in groups of at least 2. If you are sending someone off by themselves make sure they have some type of armor, dodge or a victim near by (trade in for health in the solitaire game)
  • Remember to draw the crypt cards for your own figures when attempting to slay. It sucks when you remember this 2 moves later.
  • There is nothing wrong with figuring out the opposing armies moves before you do yours, in a solitaire game. This is called strategy. And just because you know what the opposing figures next action may be doesn't mean you can stop it.
  • Sometimes leaving a victim on the board to move so you don't have to flip a token and exposing a potential minion is a good option. Sometimes being smart in the fight is more important than how well you are fighting.
